DELHI - 6 MOVIE REVIEW

DELHI - 6 Movie Review
Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra .
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman .
Music : A.r rehman.
Rating: Below Average Film.

STORY & ANALYSIS :
Abhishek Bachchan magic was not worked in this movie. Sonam Kapoor looks very pretty in this film. Her acting also good. Delhi-6 clearly isn’t an autobiographical take on Rakeysh Mehra’s childhood days in the capital city. That’s because the story is set around the monkey-man episode that made headlines in Delhi some years back and Mehra surely wasn’t a child then. The treatment of the film, however, gets childishly corny at places. Of course do not expect a thriller treatment with the monkey-man chapter. This film is looks like swades released in 2004.
while coming into story Roshan Mehra (Abhishek Bachchan) coming to India, though this time not to fetch his nanny, but to get his granny (Waheeda Rehman) to Delhi gullies where she wants to spend the final phase of her life. In the bylanes of Chandni Chowk in old Delhi, Roshan is introduced to customs, conventions and relations alien to him. Meanwhile panic spreads in Delhi as news of random attacks by a mysterious creature titled monkey-man makes headlines. Muddled up between the liking for his land and ladylove Bittu (Sonam Kapoor), the movie progresses as monkey-man gives ways to discuss social and political issues like the Hindu-Muslim and upper-lower class divide. A.R Rehman music was gave life to the film. The movie makes an interesting start as it introduces multiple characters and gets into multi-track storytelling. But soon the characters and the tracks start jumbling up, giving way for continuity lapses in the multi-dimensional narrative. It’s surprising that the same multi-layered storytelling that Rakeysh Mehra exploited brilliantly in Rang De Basanti , intermittently handicaps the narration in Delhi-6 . Midways the movie, it’s still difficult to comprehend what’s the central lead of the story amongst Roshan’s love for Bittu, Bittu’s quest for Indian Idol independence, grandma’s loyalty towards motherland or a family feud (Om Puri – Pawan Malhotra sibling rivalry). Unfortunately even the monkey-man track doesn’t help connecting the individual installments and rather works only on peripheral level. However, it resolves all above conflicts in a single-stroke climax, in addition to an Ayodhya-Babri Masjid kind of issue it incites towards the end. The core theme bears a striking resemblance with Swades which is augmented by the theatrical Ram Leela episodes and the cast-and-class concerns it tackles. But while Ashutosh Gowariker had a direct approach of facing the issues of India in Swades , Mehra handles it indirectly using the monkey-man metaphor. While the screenplay remains cheerful in the first half, it doesn’t escape the preachy trappings in the climax.
PERFORMANCE :
Some smart gems in the screenplay include the scene where a cow is delivering amidst jam-packed main road traffic and being worshipped by every passerby. And an abstract-cum-artistic sequence from the same screenplay includes an Indo-American fusion fantasy song ‘ Dil Gira Dafatan ’ which confuses in conveying its concept. There isn’t any conspicuous chemistry between the lead pair of Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor. And Amitabh’s intangible appearance in the last scene was absolutely avoidable. The art direction decently recreates the Delhi set in Rajasthan studio but is confined to four lanes at the Chandni Chowk crossroads. Binod Pradhan employs disturbing camera movements while Vaibhavi Merchant adds grace to Masakali movements. Rahman’s soulful music lacks a befitting body though. From its eclectic cast, it’s startling to see that the supposed lead players Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor have very shallow characterizations and thereby weak screen-presence as well. With his existing image, it’s difficult to visualize Abhishek Bachchan as a NRI. It never comes across in his accent, attitude or outlook. Sonam Kapoor’s immature act isn’t impressive.

The better performances come from the character-artist cast of Deepak Dobriyal, Atul Kulkarni, Vijay Raaz, Pawan Malhotra and Om Puri. Rishi Kapoor is pleasing but his character is too short-lived. Same for Divya Dutta, who is likeable in her small role. Waheeda Rehman sounds stressed.
CONCLUSION :
Comparison with Mehra’s last attempt is inevitable, thereby generating gigantic expectations. Rakeysh Mehra seamlessly connected with the audiences through his mesmerizing storytelling in Rang De Basanti . Sadly, Delhi-6 is quite colourless in that contrast it is not convinced the audiences and it is a below Average film.

Story :
Siddarth Varma (Siddarth) is free-spirited guy and lives with his mother Rajayalakshmi (Ramyakrishna), a college professor. His father Prakash (Prakash), a rich businessman, is separated from his mother. Geeta (Tamannah) comes to Hyderabad for higher studies and stays with her relative Gachchibowli Diwakar (Brahmanandam). Geeta and Siddarth have common group of friends and their acquaintance slowly turns into romance. When Siddarth approaches Geeta’s father (Nasser) seeking his daughter for marriage, he refuses to accept their love. He asks how can he give away his daughter to a family, which is broken. Now both the lovers take up the task to unite Rajaylakshmi and Prakash. Finally Siddhardh & expectations of audiences .Tamanna comibiation not reached.

Analysis :

It is a love story but showed differently. This film was a good family entertainer . I think it is a looking like Bommarillu movie. Because some many seens are very nearly to bommarillu movie. Konchem Istam Konchem Kastam strikes right chord with audiences. It is worth a dekko for its clean romance, interesting screenplay, great visuals, and good climax and not to forget the neat performances by the lead actors. New director Kishore blends love and sentiment drama perfectly. His handling of second-half and climax sequences has made the difference to this love-story. What strikes in the movie in the first place are its bright visuals (very excellent camera work by Vijay Chakravarthy). And then the lead pair’s chemistry - Siddardh and Tamanna are really a cute pair – makes the audiences to involve in the movie. The movie has very urban setting and the treatment is also urbane. Despite all these positive points, the film doesn’t rise to the level of ‘outstanding flick’. On the whole it ends up just a good romantic entertainer. It has its flaws too. Length (with nearly 2.50 minutes) is its biggest sore point. Music on the screen is very weak except for one or two songs. And also lacks entertainment.
Its is Above AVERAGE Movie.

Performances :

Siddarth looks very handsome than ever. His character is extension to the role that he has done in Bommarillu and NVNV. Like in these two movies, he goes through a ‘test’ to win his lover. Yet, like always, he comes out with good performances especially in the climax sequences. But the real scene-stealer is bewitching beauty Tamannah. She looks gorgeous and exhibits emotions rightly. With her girl-next-door dress sense, and depth in her performance attracts the audiences instantly. Her character is also well etched. Like Bhumika in Khushi, she is lovable and adamant.

Ever dependable Prakash Raju does the role of father to Siddarth for third time and he delivers goods. Ramyakrishna as mother to Siddhu gives matured performance. She looks beautiful too. Brahamanandam’s character as cricketer is unrelated to the story and lacks punch. It is Venumadhav who provides enough laughs and has good role to say. Nasser as caring father is okay.

Technically, Vijay Chakravarthy’s work catches the eye. His bright visuals bring positive mood to this romantic drama. Story is simple and straightforward but the screenplay ( Vikram Siri and Deepak Raj) has real depth. Yet, it drags on post–interval to some extent. Some of the dialogues by Abburi Ravi are heart touching. Music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is not great. But lyrics have good meaning (Chandrabose, Sirivennela). They are good to listen but on screen, they lack punch. Except the Panchire Panchire song, no number makes impact and the choreography of the songs is also bad.

Producer Nallamalupu Srinivas has invested lot of money for rich look of the film. His production values are good. New director Kishore exhibits his talent in handling the sentiment and romantic scenes. He is here to stay.

The Bottom-line of the film Konchem Istam Konchem Kastam attracts the youth and family audiences. Interesting second half, very excellent cinematography and Tamannah are major assets of the movie. Length is its biggest flaw. New director Kishore blends love and sentiment drama perfectly. And Showed differently.

Slumdog Millionaire Movie Review

Slumdog Millionaire Movie Review
Cast: Dev Patel, Anil Kapoor, Irfan Khan, Saurabh Shukla, Freida Pinto, Ankur Vikal
Director: Danny Boyle (Loveleen Tandan (co-director: India))
Music: AR Rehman
Cinematography: Anthony Dod Mantle
Editing: Chris Dickens
Rating:

Enetertainment Quotient: 80%
Genre: Crime/Romance
Runtime: 120 min

Synopsis:
Jamal (Dev Patel) is an orphan from the slums of Mumbai. He gets to attend the game show ‘who wants to be a millionaire’ when he is 18. Surprisingly he starts giving the right answers till he gets into the final round. And all these questions have relevance to certain incidents happened in his life. The game show host and cops suspect that Jamal cheated in the show. The rest of the story is all about how he proves his innocence and wins his lady love that’s been playing hide and seek with him since his childhood.

Actors:
The kids who did the roles of Salim, Jamal and Latika are adorable. They are the best in the film than the main leads. Among the notable Indian actors, Saurabh Shukla is the best. Ankur Vikal is excellent. Anil Kapoor is pretty natural as a wicked and biased host of the game show. After some point of time, we start hating him. Dev Patel is adequate. Irfan Khan played similar kind of roles earlier. Hence it is a cake walk for him.

Story – screenplay – direction:
The story of this film is adapted from a book Q & A written by an Indian author Vikas Swaroop. It is an interesting story that has two parallel plots interwoven into a game show. Direction of the film is brilliant. The screenplay is extraordinary. This film combines both arts and commerce. It has a highly realistic treatment to it with an undercurrent box office winning formula.

The following scenes are worth mentioning:

1. The cop chasing the kids in slums
2. Young Jamal jumping into shit pond to get an autograph of Amitabh.
3. Young Salim asking his boss for 50 rupees when his boss asks him to be professional.
4. Jamal acting as tour guide in Taj Mahal
5. Darshan to Ghanashyam scene
6. Jamal’s conversation with the blind in which he comes to know about the photo on 100 dollar bill.
7. Salim taking the life of the guy who bothered him.
8. Jamal trying to steal chapati on a moving train
9. Jamal not choosing B as an answer for the penultimate question

Commercial screenplay payoffs in the film (typical Indian):

1. Spaced flashback narration: It has three threads of game show, police interrogation and flashback simultaneously run.

2. Love story: Jamal loves Latika unconditionally. She goes missing from him. And he finds her. She changes hands and is used by many men. But he stills love her. And all ends well in the end.

3. Salim character: Salim is the elder brother of Jamal. He is protective of his brother, at the same time egoistic. He behaves selfish at times and finally becomes an admirable person.

4. Three Musketeers Thread: The beginning of the movie has a teacher telling the students about ‘Three Musketeers’. Jamal considers his brother, himself and Latika to be three musketeers. The final question in the game show is about the name of the third musketeer. It was a beautifully written thread.

5. Mental recall: Jamal is recognized by the blind boy, Latita and Salim at different points of life journey.

6. Biased host of the game show: The host of the game show is a biased man. He does not want Jamal to win. He goes to the extent of apprehending Jamal to the cops. Hence the last two questions in the game show give huge commercial pay off when Jamal nails the host with the right answers though he does not know if it’s right.

7. Spirit of human triumph: Triumph is important than winning money. Hence he never backs out in the middle for money. Jamal risks it till the last round as it is all about the spirit of human triumph.

Some of the unconvincing points:

1. Three Musketeers lesson in a school attended by slum boys.
2. Jamal not knowing about Gandhi’s photo on Indian note.

The debate of India being shown as a pathetic country in this film:
When somebody is doing a film on a slum boy, it is bound to show the hard reality in slum areas. That does not mean that India has been projected in the wrong way. When somebody watched ‘City of God’ (reviiew here) which shows the bad side of Brazil country, one expects it to be a poor country with little scope for improvement. But actually Brazil is one of the fastest growing economies in the world along with Russia, India and China (BRIC countries). India is not for the people who judge it by watching fictional movies. Hence, let’s not bother about it.

Other technical departments:
Background score by AR Rehman is peppy and energetic (especially the beat scored by kids chasing scenes in the initial part of the movie). Cinematography is excellent. Editing is superb with no dull moment. This film shows Mumbai slums in a magnificent way.

Analysis:
Slumdog Millionaire is an Indian film at heart with Indian emotions catering to Indian sensibilities. This film balances arts with commerce. It is also the best example of presenting a story in a realistic way without missing the formula. The best part in this film is the screenplay and most of the credit for this screenplay should go to the Indian writer Vikas Swaroop who wrote ‘Q & A’ book. Direction of the film is world class and narration balances the sensible humor and subtle tragedy. On a whole Slumdog Millionaire is a must see film and will put India on the world cinema map like Gandhi (1982) film. This movie shutups the critics mouth. Critics are thumpup for this moive.

Awards :
This film got four golden globe awards & enters in 10 categories in Oscar nominations.
