NANDAMURI BALAKRISHNA SIMHA TELUGU MOVIE REVIEW:

It has been six long years since Balakrishna delivered a hit. His last blockbuster was Lakshmi Narasinha (2004). All the movies that came during this period disappointed his fans and general audiences alike. But his fans can rejoice now. Because this film was much better than those past films. Balakrishna’s latest flick Simha is packed with right commercial ingredients to satisfy them.

Story:

Well coming into the story,Sri Mannarayana (Balakrishna) is a lecturer in a college in Hyderabad but he doesn’t tolerate any injustice and bashes up the wronged guys. A voluptuous female colleague (Namita) loves him. So is Janaki (Sneha Ullal) who is saved by Sri Mannarayana from goons. When a rowdy (Aditya Menon) from Vizag comes to take away Janaki from Sri Mannarayana, a flash back is revealed. 30 years ago, in Bobbili, a family of landlords treats the local people as slaves and kills if anyone revolts against. Now enters, a foreign returned doctor Narasinha (Balakrishna) belonging to Bobbili royal dynasty to save the people. Within no time, he takes up law onto his hands and becomes savior. But he and his wife (Nayanatara) are killed in a fight in the end. It is Sri Mannarayana’s job to finish the mission.

Analysis:

First half of the movie is adequate. The flashback episode is established well. Some of the shots in the film are like in Jayamanade ra movie which was performed by venkatesh. But boyapati was aware of that, so he maked changes in his own manner. The climax should have been more effective. The plus points of the movie are Bala Krishna performance (and dialogues) and mass elements. There is too much of violence/fights in the movie. Simha movie generated tremendous pre-release positive buzz and it resulted in humongous openings. We have to wait and see how Simha is going to capitalize summer advantage. It is the masses who make any movie blockbuster and this movie has ample mass elements. Simha is going to be a feast for the fans of Bala Krishna. It is satisfied the nandamuri fans.

Artist Performance:

Bala Krishna as usal he is terrific as Simha in the flashback episode. His dialogue delivery is controlled and is extremely effective. His get-up as Simha is highly respectable and dignified. After a long gap, Bala Krishna fans are going to cherish the looks and performance of Bala Krishna as he plays it to the galleries. His other character of Srimannarayana is also good.
Nayana Tara is very good in the flashback episode with jewellery and traditional wear belonging to lineage of kings. The voice given by Sunitha helps in some key episodes of the movie. Sneha Ullal is improving from film to film and she is good too. Namitha should watch her weight. Kota comes up with another fine performance. There are four other villains. Among the comedians, Krishna Bhagawan's role is entertaining. KR Vijaya did a lengthy role and she is adequate.

Venu Madhav and Brahmanandam are clichéd.

Technical departments:
Story of the movie is not new, but follows a time-tested formula. Boyapati Seenu who mastered mass treatment to his movies like Bhadra and Tulasi made sure that there are ample commercial elements that satisfy the thrust of masses and fans. He projected Bala Krishna in the right way and extracted powerful mass performance. Screenplay of the movie is predictable. Direction is good in parts. Though masses might like it, the violence in the movie is very excessive. He should have softened blood-shed and tamed the commercial elements to make this movie a universally appealing one.

Other departments:

Music by Chakri is okay. Dialogues by Boyapati Seenu deserve a special mention. He wrote powerful dialogues to Bala Krishna and made sure that Bala Krishna delivers them to the maximum effect. Editing is alright. Producer has spent a lot of money on the movie and it is shown on screen. I think he gains it very soon.

Final View:

The film doesn't try to do anything new but it offers a typical violent treat to all those Nandamuri fans who have been waiting to see him in the mass image. While the first half fails to take off and has the regular elements of fights and romance, it is the second half that changes the whole story and gets a lot of momentum. The grandeur is seen in the second half and with violence and nasty words used in between, the masses might connect to it. This may not be a bumper hit at the box office but it will reach the success mark if the fans work towards it.

It is a Good treat for Nandamuri fans only. If you are a big fan of nandamuri family , go and watch it.

Prabhas Darling Telugu Movie review:

This time prabhas and karunakaran combination not worked big on the screen.Director Karunakaran is known for presenting feel-good films with wafer-thin storyline. He does the same again with this Darling. Nothing new in the script but the film’s second half evokes some interest among the viewers thanks to some sentiment scenes. Prabhas’s dashing looks, Andrew’s eye catching visuals and second half scenes are the only praiseworthy. The film also lacks entertainment and songs are another big drawback. Don’t expect too much. Pretty ordinary flick, solely relying on star factors. The director has been stuck in Toliprema days (his debut film), so you hardly see any novel thing in presentation except the marvelous CG song of snow drenched Hyderabad ala Switzerland.

Story:

Prabhas (Prabhas) has a childhood sweetheart named Nandini (Kajal Agarwal) and they are separated during their childhood. Nandini migrates to Swiss along with her father. Meanwhile Prabhas rejects love proposals from other girls as his heart belongs to Nandini. Prabhas gets a chance to meet Nandini for the first time after the separation during the reunion of their respective parents who have studied together. The rest of the story is all about how Prabhas wins the love of Nandini.

Artist Performance:

Prabhas is growing as an entertaining actor with each new movie. His comedy timing is impressive in this movie. His costumes and styling deserves a mention. Since there is no strength in the story line of the movie, the director had to put lot of burden on Prabhas, who delivers with elegance and flair.
Kajal Agarwal’s characterization in the first half of the movie is quite dumb and is passive in the second half. Shradda Das, who plays the character of a girl chasing the hero relentlessly, does a good job. Mukesh Rushi’s work is more like a special appearance as a villain. Prabhu is adequate as hero’s father. Ahuti Prasad doesn’t look natural in his role. MS Narayana, Sivannarayana and Srinivasa Reddy are ok. The kid who played the role of heroine’s kid brother is pretty good.

Analysis:

First half of the film is not interesting. Second half gets better. The movie is good towards the last half-an-hour. Karunakaran didn’t stick to his strengths and tried to make an entertainment oriented film with a hero-centric approach. The plus points of the movie are Prabhas and a few comedy episodes in the second half. On the flip side, the Swiss episode and lack of regard for story mars the movie. We go to Karunakaran movies to watch his kind of work, not the kind of work the routine commercial directors dish out! We have to wait and see how Darling fares at box office this summer.

Technical Departments:

Story of the movie is clichéd one. The difference between the director’s earlier movies and this one is the screenplay twist is given during the interval. Directing a screenplay based movie like this one is a tricky task. The entire Swiss episode holds the key to this screenplay. The actual story takes place only in the second half. Hence it becomes extremely important to make sure that the Swiss episode is well written. Unfortunately, the Swiss episode is dull resulting in the entire first half appear disengaged. Since the entire story takes place in the second half, the latter part appears more interesting than the first half. The concept of second half where the hero has to impress the heroine and her father despite of having another guy vying for his girl is a time-tested one as we had seen such situations in countless movies. Karunakaran, who is known for poetic thoughts, sensible humor and nice montages, leaves his strengths aside to make a movie that revolves around the characterization of hero. Hence the entire movie turned out to be a series of comedy episodes written around the hero.

Other departments:

Dialogues written by Swamy are good in parts. Music by GV Prakash is average. The background score should have been better. Cinematography by Andrew is very good. He explored Swiss locales well. Action episodes by Peter Heins (mostly inspired by Korean Movies) are good though look forced in the movie. Editing is adequate. Visual effects in songs (3rd song and the snow effect in Hyderabad) are commendable.

Final View:

Darling is plain simple movie with no big twists and turns. Although the film’s central idea of ‘imagined’ character appearing in real life might seem novel but the same idea came in one of Rajashekar’s early movies. On the whole, the film is just time pass flick. Its a good film to watch with your family members .

Akshay Kumar Profile

Often referred to as the Bruce Lee of Bollywood, Akshay Kumar or Akki, has come a long way since his entry into the film industry. Originally known as Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia, Akshay is considered to be one of the most handsome actors in Bollywood. With a towering height of 6’, Akshay kumar aims higher, he plans to do films out of the ordinary.

Born to a non-filmy family of Amritsar, on 9th September, 1967, Akshay has one sister. He began as a waiter in Bangkok and simultaneously learnt martial arts in Hong kong. He then joined modeling in the 1990’s and eventually entered films.

Akshay proved to be a superb action hero of the early 90’s. With films like Khiladi, Main Khiladi Tu Anadi, Mr. And Mrs. Khiladi etc, he was titled “Khiladi No. 1” of Bollywood. His acting skills and amazing stunts, got him a permanent place in the hearts of millions of his fans around the world.

Akshay married the elder daughter of the famous couple Dimple and Rajesh Khanna, Twinkle Khanna on 14th January 2001, after a fairly long courtship. Their son, Araav, is now 5 years old. From a long time he has been linked up with many of his co stars like Raveena Tandon, Shilpa Shetty and Pooja Batra, but Akki believes that rumours should be left as they are..just rumours.

From his debut film, Saugandh, Akshay has come full circle. He has achieved what many just dream of; name fame and commercial success. Story And Analysis:

If a piece of cinema ever had its heart in its place, this is it. Don't let the sluggish pace, the absence of stylish shots and flamboyant frames fool you into believing that this is a film with no style.
The style behind "Paathshaala" is in its inner conviction.
The obvious artlessness of presentation with the students and teachers of an imaginary school behaving with a bluntness that replicates the dialect of television talk shows rather than the realism of cinema, must not come in the way of our wholeheartedly acceptance of the film for what it is. An unconditionally sincere effort to understand why the country's educational system pressurises children into performance anxiety.
While Basha Lal's cinematography is free of poetic flourishes, the "Ae Khuda" track just sweeps you off your feet. That is not the effect this grounded and sensible film and its unhurried pace strive to achieve otherwise.
The storytelling is suffused with sensitive pockets. To cite some examples - in one sequence the veteran sports teacher (played ably by Sushant Singh) gets together students to climb on one another to make a human pyramid for the sake of media coverage. The callousness of the freelance journalist as he talks into the cellphone while the students sweat it out in the sun, smothers your cynicism about such manipulative drama in the narrative.
Elsewhere, a little boy (Dwij Yadav) is made to stand in the sun for not paying the school fees. And then that decisive moment where a crass ad-maker reduces a little kid (Ali Haji) to tears, just chokes you.

Artist Performance:
The unevenness of pace notwithstanding, there is no mistaking the film's earnestness of purpose. Every actor, young and old, pitches an honest and transparent performance. The stand-out (or considering the low-key pitch, should we say stand-in?) actors are Saurabh Shukla and Anjan Shrivastava. As for the children, let's not discriminate among them. They are all utterly charming. The film's comment on the corrosion and corruption of education makes space for little-little flirty romantic liaisons among the older students. Cute!

Other Performance:
The music reality show agent, who auditions the school kids as though they are fish to be fried straight from the market, is almost caricatural in his grotesque commercialism.
Then you realise that real life has sold out to a kind of vulgar self-gratification that makes it look more like a soap opera than the soaps that we see on television.
There is an inherent wisdom in the homilies that "Paathshaala" serves up so sincerely. The narration is so laidback and detoxicated you often wonder if the director believes that the inherent harmony of real life can only be captured in leisurely grace.
Comparisons to Aamir Khan's "Taare Zameen Par" are inevitable. Though flawed and at times failed, the overview of the educational system in "Paathshaala" is macro-cosmic in its own right.
The plot meanders into various issues that plague the educational institutions before negotiating itself into a clumsily 'epic' climax where the whole country's media becomes interested in the politics of the school where the plot unfolds.

Final View:
As for Shahid Kapoor, the guy says his Hindi lines as though he just thought of them and expresses his connectivity with the kids with a warmth and effortlessness that makes the other superstar teachers on celluloid look rather put-on in comparison. Its a Good film To watch this weekend.

Phoonk - 2 (Aavaham) Movie review:

Its not a horror film from Ramgopal varma, But its a big horror for "Varma".

Ram Gopal Varma seems to be hell-bent to break his own records. When we were convinced that horror films can’t get horrible than Agyaat , RGV clears our misconception with Phoonk 2 . In this horrendous attempt, Ramu pays a homage to all his earlier made horror flicks, extends the tribute to Ramsay mould of face horror and ends it on the note of (believe it or faint) his arch rival Karan Johar’s template of tearjerkers.
There is absolutely no regards to the story and the focus is merely on resorting to as much technical gimmickry as possible from standard sound effects, shocking shot-takings and gyrating camera movements. To get the dead of the prequel, back to life is the most lifeless way to start a sequel and Phoonk 2 does exactly that.

Story and Analysis:
The story starts on the same old grounds of a family shifting to a new bungalow which is haunted. Rajiv (Sudeep) and Aarti (Amruta Khanvilkar) venture into new verandah with the premise(s) not being much different from RGV’s Vaastu Shastra . Their kids get home a doll they find in the woods but scaring through such plastic faces in present times is no child’s play . Further a couple runs helter-skelter through jungle as if they have seen Ramu’s Agyaat . Finally the filmmaker seeks the spirit from Bhoot as Aarti is possessed by the ghost of Madhu (Ashwini Kalsekar) who was killed in the prequel .
An owl-eyed exorcist (Jeeva) is added for no good reason. Amidst most predictable proceedings a wife wakes up from nightmares screaming ‘ koi hai... koi hai ’ and the husband keeps repeating ‘just relax... just relax’. The concluding reels are a tiresome hide-and-seek game between the ghost and the gharwale where a white-faced, white-eyed banshee follows every family member walking in robotic steps like Ramsay’s zombies.
Suddenly the family starts mourning on the death of their female head and after ten minutes of this emotional trauma, the end credits roll. And you keep wondering... What happened to the evil? What happened to good ole Ram Gopal Varma? What happened to the basic cinematic belief of victory of good over evil? If the makers want to extent the answers in another sequel, that thought is scarier than this entire film.

Artist Performance:

Sudeep just repeats his act from the first part. Amruta Khanvilkar was better off without the plastic makeup. Ashwini Kalsekar could have been used to more spooky effect. Child actor Ahsaas Channa doesn’t get much scope this time. Neeru Bajwa and Amit Sadh are wasted.

Other Performance:

Phoonk 2 could win an award for the most long-drawn-out sequences ever with practically nothing happening in most of the scenes. The lethargic pace doesn’t add to the effect but only tests your patience levels. Milind Gadagkar’s screenplay is as much disappointing as much as his direction. He tries to tune himself in Ram Gopal Varma’s technique of horror-thrillers but sadly RGV has become so repetitive that he no more seems to be a trendsetter. Gadagkar employs every cliché from spooky dream sequences, unreflecting mirrors, blood-gore to face horror but fails to impress with his lack of innovation. The only residual redeeming scenes include minced-murder of a domestic help, a kitchen-sequence and termination of the tantric .

Final View:
Phoonk 2 literally blows things out of proportion. Watching this film is like indulging in two hours of foreplay with no sex.

Prince Telugu & Hindi Movie Review:

Music video director Kookie Gulati’s feature film debut is designed in the video game mode where, at level one, the lead player robs diamonds by kilos but the story lacks weight. At level two, Gulati chooses to be in his comfort zone and establishes the player’s heist handiness through a music video montage in opening credits.

Story:

The film begins with a huge diamond heist by master thief Prince (Vivek) and his associates followed by few more such high profile robberies. Three months are shown passed by and Prince wakes up with a gun shot wound on his hand and amnesia as well. His butler PK (Mayur Puri) reveals to him that he works as the right hand man for an underworld don in South Africa named Sarang and that he has a girl friend, Maya. But then things start getting complicated as he is also being hunted by a special Indian intelligence agency I-Grip headed by one Colonel Khanna (Dalip Tahil), by Indian CBI officer Khan (Sanjay Kapoor) and also by Sarang who desperately wants the coin that is in Prince’s possession. The coin carries the power to threaten the future of the Human Race. What leaves Prince further puzzled are the three gals (Aruna Shields, Nandana Sen and Neeru Bajwa) he encounters time to time, all claiming to be Maya, his girlfriend. What follows as Prince decides to unravel the mystery with a death threat at every turn forms the rest of the plot.

Analysis:

If you are willing to suspend your belief then Prince is a complete paisa vasool action thriller for you. Slickly shot, this debut directorial venture of Kookie Gulati has been made on par with many popular International action thrillers. Some may find many twists of the plot implausible especially the one involving brain mapping and memory being erased and regained back again using computer softwares. But if one can enjoy movies like Face Off then Prince deserves better. The first half is racy and keeps you guessing what will happen next as a new twist and turn unfolds at regular intervals. The second half gets more action heavy and carries a good twist in the pre-climax. The film however lacks good one-liners. Amongst the best action (Allan Amin) high points of the film are the chase sequences on the Durban highway and Aruna Shields’ gun totting entry and then finally the climax.

Artist Performance:

Vivek Oberoi seems to have given it his all and its results are visible. He is not only excellent in the action sequences but good in the dramatic and confrontation sequences as well. Isaiah has terrific screen presence and fits the part perfectly well. Amongst the gals, Aruna Shields is the most impressive followed by Nandana Sen.Neeru Bajwa doesn’t get much scope as her character gets sidelined. Dalip Tahil, Sanjay Kapoor and Mayur Puri (also the dialogue writer of the film) provide adequate support.

Other Performance:

One would have attempted to overlook the cyborg credibility in the storyline had the film been steady in other departments. But Prince is marred with mechanical performances, standard stunt sequences (Allan Amin), repetitive cinematography shots (Vishnu Rao) and corny dialogues (Mayur Puri).

Music by debutante Sachin Gupta is already a chartbuster with the two numbers Tere Liye and O Mere Khuda on the top of the charts.

Final View:

This film was running in levels. First two you can feel good. You are assured this game isn’t a version of The Bourne Identity series by level five when the story loses level-headedness. This is not a big boost of vivek but it feel beter to him. If you are real action movie fan, go and enjoy the film.

Varudu Telugu Movie Review:

The film created a lot of hype regarding its proper Telugu wedding and the heroine factor but both of them have turned out to be a damp squib. The film takes off on a wrong footing and there is no voltage in it. The second half gets further complicated and the final nail on the head is hit with the bizarre climax. Barring few places where the technical values are good, the film has nothing at all and the blame is completely the director's. Despite having lavish budget and efficient cast, he has not been able to deliver a proper product. The film will not survive for more than two weeks.

Story:

Sandeep aka Sandy (Allu Arjun) is gen-next youngster who parties hard and has modern outlook but his ideas towards marriage are traditional. As he got job in USA, his working parents (Suhasini and Ashish Vidyaradhi), both got married against the wishes of their parents, ask him to get married. He accepts and tells them that he would rather want to marry a girl that is selected by them in traditional style and wants his marriage ceremony to be conducted in as 5-day event. He also refuses to see his bride before the marriage. Everything is arranged according to wishes, and his marriage is fixed with Deepti (Bhanu Sri Mehra). On the time of marriage, the bride is kidnapped by a local rowdy Diwakar (Deepti). How hero brings his bride back from the clutches of this goon forms the rest of the story.

Artist Performance:

It is a one-man show for Allu Arjun as he is there in every frame and shouldering the entire movie. He does his best to salvage the proceedings. He excels in action sequences and in songs. He really looks too good in ‘Varudu’ getup. Tamil actor Arya steals the thunder as the bad guy and brings life to the movie with his antics post interval. Even though Ravi Shankar dubs his voice and the way Arya mouths the dialogues in various ‘getups’ is awesome. His character is designed in the style of Heath Ledgers’ The Dark Knight. Newcomer Bhanu Mehra as bride lacks glamour. Nasser, Rao Ramesh, Suhasini and director Singeetam in their respective characters have done justice. Chiranjeevi’s beginning voice-over hardly has any impact.

Techincal And Other Departments:

Technically, art-work (Ashok) and cinematography (RD Rajashekar) are the ones that stand out. The visual effects done for marriage mandapam are impressive. Music by Manisharma is good especially “Idu rojula pelli ..” and “Bahusha Chenchala..” are mellifluous. The way the song “Bahusha Chenchala..” shot is quite impressive. It is done with great aesthetic sense. Costumes created for the song are equally superb.
Dialogues by Thota Prasad are okay. Director Gunashekar shows his craftsmanship in creating good visuals but his screenplay is mediocre. The way he has narrated the film in the first half shows his lack of grip on the story. He has created and designed scenes from various successful movies but his narration has not interesting. Production values are good.

Analysis:

Basic story line of Varudu is just another interpretation of Ramayana. To this plot line, director Gunashekar adds the idea of by-gone ceremonies of 5-day marriage and his style of ‘Okkadu’ heroism. In Ramayana, Ravana kidnaps Seeta when they lead life of Vanavasam. Here in villain kidnaps the heroine, just before her marriage with the hero. Or to put in other way, in Okkadu, hero saves heroine from villain and puts her in Charminar. In Varudu, villain abducts the heroine and puts in his home. Similarities and inspirations apart, basic conflict in the film’s script is solid but the director has failed to tell it engrossingly. He takes plenty of time (almost one hour) to come to the point and after the story is established, he again loses the grip.

First hour of the film is quite boring. In the entire first half, only ‘Bahusha Chenchala’ song is captivating. Soon after the interval the movie comes on the track but again goes off from it. Towards the climax it bounces back, but by that time, one gets the feeling of boredom. Allu Arjun’s high-energy, Arya’s scintillating performance and some action episodes are the saving grace. The lip-to-lip kiss scene is also shot nicely, though.

Final View:

It's a Big Set back for allu arjun and megastar family fans,Varudu ’s storyline has potential to become good action entertainer but the director’s unimpressive screenplay spoiled it. Allu Arjun has tried hard to shoulder the entire movie and in the second half Arya takes the onus but on the whole, the film lacks punch. Director Gunashekar's screenplay is the main flaw. It is just reversal of 'Okkadu' sans ‘entertainment’.
